1975 - TPA was first enacted on January 1, 1975, under the Trade Act of 1974.
1979 - TPA used to enact the Tokyo Round Agreements Act of 1979, which implemented the 1974-1979 multilateral trade liberalization agreements reached under the Tokyo Round negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the predecessor to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
1994 - Since 1979, the authority has been used for 14 bilateral/regional free trade agreements (FTAs) and one additional set of multilateral trade liberalization agreements under the GATT (now the World Trade Organization (WTO))—the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994.
2005 - Congress renewed TPA, applying it to agreements entered into before July 1, 2007.
2005 - First talks began as the Trans-Pacific Strategic Partnership Agreement (TPP) which include three countries (Chile, New Zealand and Singapore), and Brunei subsequently joined the agreement.
2007 - July 1, 2007, TPA expired
2008 - U.S. Begins negotiations with the TPP - a proposed regional free trade agreement (FTA) with 12 other countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
2011 - Following the U.S.-EU Summit held in Washington, D.C. the High-Level Working Group (HWLG) was directed by U.S. and EU leaders to identify policies and measures to increase transatlantic trade and investment
Feb. 2013 - U.S. and EU leaders announced that they would initiate internal preparations to launch the T-TIP negotiations.
July 2013 - The U.S. and EU began T-TIP negotiations under the leadership of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
2014 - TPA has expired up to this point and the current Administration would like to see it renewed.
